Morocco Desert Tour Guide: How to Plan a Sahara Trip

Routes, number of days, desert camps and what to pack for a Sahara trip from Marrakech or Fes.

A night in the Sahara is the highlight of many Morocco trips. Here is how to plan it well.

Where are the dunes?

Morocco's two main dune fields are Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga, and Erg Chigaga, beyond M'Hamid. Erg Chebbi is more accessible by paved road; Erg Chigaga is more remote and requires a final stretch by 4x4.

How many days?

From Marrakech, Merzouga is roughly 9–10 hours by road, so a round trip takes at least 3 days. We usually recommend 4–5 days, or a one-way crossing from Marrakech to Fes (or the reverse), which avoids backtracking.

What you see on the way

  • The Tizi n'Tichka pass across the High Atlas
  • Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified village
  • The Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge
  • Palm oases and kasbahs

Choosing a camp

Camps range from simple Berber tents with shared facilities to luxury camps with en-suite bathrooms, proper beds and fine dining. Tell us what matters to you — comfort, authenticity, privacy — and we will recommend the right fit.

Camel or 4x4?

The classic arrival is by camel, usually around an hour at sunset. If riding is not for you, a 4x4 transfer to camp is easy to arrange.

What to pack

  • A scarf or buff for sun, wind and sand
  • Warm layers for the evening (essential in winter)
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • A small overnight bag — large luggage usually stays in the vehicle
  • A headlamp for moving around camp at night
