Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers about traveling to Morocco and planning your trip with us.

Before you travel

Do I need a visa to visit Morocco?

At the time of writing, U.S. citizens can generally enter Morocco for tourism for up to 90 days without a visa, with a passport valid for the duration of the stay (many airlines recommend at least six months of validity). Entry rules can change and depend on your nationality, so always confirm with the U.S. Department of State or the Moroccan embassy or consulate before booking.

What is the best time to visit Morocco?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are generally the most comfortable seasons for combining cities, mountains and desert. Summer is very hot inland and in the Sahara, but pleasant on the Atlantic coast. Winter is mild in Marrakech during the day, with cold nights in the desert and snow possible in the Atlas.

Is Morocco safe for travelers?

Morocco welcomes millions of international visitors each year, and most trips are trouble-free. As anywhere, stay aware of your surroundings and belongings in busy areas. We recommend checking the current U.S. travel advisory for Morocco before and during your planning, and enrolling in the State Department's STEP program.

What currency is used in Morocco?

The Moroccan dirham (MAD). It is a closed currency, so you generally obtain it on arrival — from ATMs, which are widely available in cities, or exchange offices. Cards are accepted in many hotels and restaurants, but cash is essential in souks, small shops and rural areas.
