Marrakech Travel Guide: Where to Stay & Travel Tips

Neighborhoods, riads vs hotels, getting around the medina and the etiquette that makes a Marrakech stay smoother.

This guide covers the practical side of Marrakech: where to stay, how to get around and what to know before you arrive. For sights and activities, see our best things to do in Marrakech.

Where to stay

The medina

Staying in a riad — a traditional house built around an inner courtyard — is the classic Marrakech experience. It puts you within walking distance of the main sights. Many riads are on car-free lanes, so staff or porters will help with luggage.

Hivernage and Guéliz

The modern districts offer larger hotels, pools and restaurants, and are a short taxi ride from the medina.

The Palmeraie and beyond

Resort-style properties set among palm groves or with Atlas views — ideal for families and those who want calm.

Getting around

  • On foot in the medina — wear comfortable shoes.
  • Petit taxis for short hops; ask for the meter or agree on the fare first.
  • Private driver for day trips and airport transfers.

Etiquette & tips

  • Dress modestly out of respect, especially in the medina: covering shoulders and knees is appreciated.
  • Ask before photographing people.
  • Friendly bargaining is normal in the souks; fixed prices are common in modern shops.
  • Offers of directions from strangers are often followed by a request for a tip — a polite "no, thank you" is enough.
  • Mosques in Marrakech are generally closed to non-Muslims.

How long to stay

Three to four days is ideal, including one day trip. Marrakech also combines beautifully with the Agafay Desert, the Atlas Mountains and Essaouira.
